Our vision
"The imminent demise of the hospital has been a recurring theme for decades, yet hospitals are still thriving. There are, however, some major challenges that hospitals will have to face in coming years. While many of these stem from developments in medicine, there are also significant pressures from changes in society.

About acute trusts
In England there are 175 acute trusts, including 77 foundation trusts.

Work programmes

Key achievements
Over the last 12 months, we have worked on your behalf ? both publicly, but more often behind the scenes ? on a range of acute-specific and across-the-board issues.

Get involved
As a membership organisation, member involvement is our lifeblood. Members are responsible for steering the direction and content of our work, and ensuring that we meet their needs.

Hot issues
Healthcare associated infection (HCAI)
Infection control is top of the agenda for NHS boards. The recent HPA figures on HCAI show progress in the reduction of MRSA rates and show what the NHS can deliver, with the right focus. Read more about what we are doing to support members in tackling HCAI. Read more

NHS Health Policy Exchange: Feeding back to the DH and Influencing policy
We are very interested in hearing from Executive Board members who would like to get involved in dialogue with policy makers, to act as a sounding board for new ideas or want to feed back on how the realities of the front line are impacting on policy. Involvement includes quarterly meetings with policy makers, email consultation, as well as dinners and confidential seminars with key policy influencers. Please contact Nigel Edwards.
Work programme updates
Finance, productivity and efficiency
We are continuing to ensure that policy makers, the media, politicians and other stakeholders understand the realities of NHS financial issues and the extent to which they require bold strategic change. We will be aiming to feed in the views of acute trusts into the spending review. Read more
Payment by Results and the specialist top up
We are currently working on the issue of the effect of changes in the tariff and specialist top up. At this stage we are very keen to hear from any of our members who have comments on this topic. Read more
