Flowers against the sky

The NHS Confederation is the independent membership body for the full range of organisations that make up today’s NHS across the UK. Our members include primary care trusts, NHS trusts, NHS foundation trusts and independent providers of NHS services. Our ambition is excellence for patients, the public and staff by supporting leadership of the new NHS. Together, we help our members improve health and health services by:

The Confederation meets both the distinct needs of parts of the NHS and their collective needs:

  • Our networks focus on meeting the specific needs of foundation trusts, PCTs, ambulance trusts, independent providers and mental health trusts by giving them a distinct voice and services specifically for them.
  • We also provide a collective voice and services for all types of NHS organisation. As part of this, NHS Employers represents trusts in England on workforce issues and helps employers to ensure the NHS is a place where people want to work.

Through our work, we hope to contribute to:

  • Sound policy, public confidence, a balanced public debate and successful implementation
  • Informed leaders about the changing agenda and their role, and the spread of good practice
  • Well supported staff.

We work across the UK and Europe. We run the NHS European office to help members understand the impact of the EU on health policy and to influence European policy. The Welsh NHS Confederation and the Northern Ireland Confederation meet the distinct and collective needs of members in Wales and Northern Ireland. In Scotland, we have a subscription service for information but do not represent NHS organisations.

Values

We have many qualities but these are the essential values we must always have in order to fulfil our ambitions:

  • Patients and the public first
  • Member driven
  • Independent challenge
  • Employment excellence

We have a unique role in creating dialogue between the full range of health players.
