The main duties and functions of health and wellbeing boards require them to have strong engagement across their communities. After examining the benefits of engagement, this report sets out a framework of different ways that boards might approach engagement in their localities, highlighting examples of current mechanisms being used, exploring how these have developed and the advantages of working in these ways.

This report was developed as part of the National Learning Network for health and wellbeing boards, a programme funded by the Department of Health and supported by the NHS Confederation, the Local Government Association and the NHS NHS Institute for Innovation and Improvement, to share learning and support the establishment of well functioning boards.
