Report is a boost for NHS mental health services

The latest National Confidential Inquiry into Suicide and Homicide in Mental Health shows how NHS services can make a difference and save lives says Mental Health Network Director Steve Shrubb

Mental Health Network director Steve ShrubbCommenting on the publication of the latest findings from the National Confidential Enquiry into Suicide and Homicide by People with a Mental Illness, Steve Shrubb said:

"This is a really important study which confirms that NHS mental health services  have helped to reduce the rates of suicide in the UK.

"Properly co-ordinated NHS mental health services working across different specialities and with different organisations are safer and better for the people who use them.

"Given the new evidence this provides for safer NHS services, we believe there is now an unarguable case for making reducing suicide part of the NHS outcomes framework.

"We would urge all those involved with the provision of mental health services to look at the evidence in this research and make sure they are doing all they can to minimise risks for the people they support.

Notes to Editors

The NHS Confederation represents all organisations that commission and provide NHS services. It is the only membership body to bring together and speak on behalf of the whole of the NHS. We help the NHS to guarantee high standards of care for patients and best value for taxpayers by representing our members and working together with our health and social care partners.

We make sense of the whole health system, influence health policy and deliver industry-wide support functions for the NHS.
