NHS Partners Network comments on BMJ study on effects of competition in hospital care

David Worskett comments on BMJ study which considers the effects of competition in hospital care.

David Worskett, director of NHS Partners Network, said:

"The recent studies confirming the benefits of competition are among the most authoritative ever done. The Government has enough evidence to act - this study is an argument for inertia. If the NHS ignores the benefits of competition on quality patients will suffer and vested interest will continue to dominate the NHS.

"We can see the real positive impacts of competition simply by looking at the much higher levels of patient satisfaction where competition has been introduced.

"Patient choice is a central component of improving any modern healthcare service. All systems need competitive challenge to improve."

Notes to Editors

NHS Partners Network is an alliance of independent – both commercial and not-for-profit - healthcare providers commissioned by the NHS to provide primary & community, elective and diagnostic care to NHS patients free at the point of delivery. It was established in 2005 and became part of the NHS Confederation in June 2007.

The NHS Confederation is the only body to bring together the full range of organisations that make up the modern NHS. We are an independent membership organisation that represents all types of providers and commissioners of NHS services in England. We also represent trusts and health care boards in Wales; and health and social service trusts and boards in Northern Ireland.
