Quality Accounts tell a compelling story

11/06/2009
The Foundation Trust Network has launched a handbook for foundation trusts on developing Quality Accounts.

Making the most of your Quality Accounts  encourages foundation trusts to tell a compelling story about the quality of their services and use the Accounts as drivers for change.

FTN Quality accounts - Virtuous circleThe key to successful Quality Accounts will be striking a balance between reporting on comparable quality indicators and measuring and reporting on what matters to local people and stakeholders.

The handbook draws on Foundation Trust Network (FTN) member organisations' current experience with Quality Accounts, and learning and best practice from the world of business and commerce.

The handbook helps members to think through the processes required for good stakeholder engagement, embedding a responsive quality approach and producing meaningful Quality Accounts that address the interests of all stakeholders.

Sue Slipman, Director of the Foundation Trust Network who delivered an FTN Network session on Quality Accounts at the NHS Confederation annual conference in Liverpool today (Thursday 11 June) said:

"FTs are the quality brand in health, and the development of Quality Accounts will give them the opportunity to refine their thinking and communicate their philosophy and achievements to a wider audience. It will enhance the accountability to members and governors, and above all it will help to improve the quality of services to patients."

Notes to Editors

In 2008, Health Minister Lord Darzi published High Quality Care for All. This was the final report of the NHS Next Stage Review. He proposed that all providers of NHS care should produce annual quality accounts to provide the public with information on the quality of care they provide. Development of the detailed format and content of quality accounts is being facilitated by the Department of Health, and steered by stakeholders, including the regulators, National Health Service management, clinicians and patient groups. In preparation for quality accounts, NHS foundation trusts and NHS provider organisations in the East of England are acting as test cases and producing quality reports for 2008-09.

The Foundation Trust Network represents existing foundation trusts as well as acute and mental health trusts preparing for foundation status. It was established in June 2004 to represent the views of foundation trusts, to influence health policy and to share learning and good practice. The Network is hosted by the NHS Confederation.

The NHS Confederation represents more than 95% of the organisations that make up the NHS. Its members include the majority of NHS acute trusts, ambulance trusts, foundation trusts, mental health trusts, primary care trusts, independent providers of NHS services, special health authorities and strategic health authorities in England; trusts and local health boards in Wales; and health and social service trusts and boards in Northern Ireland.
