Healthy lives, healthy people: making the public health white paper proposals improve health for all

This well attended member event discussed and explored the content of the public health white paper. Chaired by Nigel Edwards, the day gave members a chance to share their views and contribute to the NHS Confederations’ consultation response.

Family fitnessIn  response to the Public Health White paper published on 30th November 2010, The NHS Confederation hosted a one day event on 2 February 2011, inviting members from across, public health, primary and secondary care.


This well attended workshop was chaired by Nigel Edwards, Acting Chief Executive, NHS Confederation.  Richard Parish, Chief Executive, Royal Society for Public Health outlined the key opportunities, risks, strengths and weaknesses of the Public Health White Paper and Nicola Stevenson, Senior Research and Policy Officer provided the NHS Confederation’s initial analysis and thinking on the public health white paper reforms. The delegates took part in, in-depth discussions regarding the: transition, outcomes framework, localism, funding and commissioning and public health intelligence; which will inform the NHS Confederation’s consultation response. The key discussions during the plenary focused on how new structures will be held to account for public health outcomes, ensuring that the new system supports public health professionals to independently analyse and report on the public’s health and how to make the health and well-being boards effective.
