Equity and excellence: What are the implications for Specialised Commissioning?

20/09/2010
This workshop on 20 September was convened by the PCT Network as part of programme of NHS Confederation events to register members’ and partners’ responses to the government’s health white paper.

DelegatesThe event, which was held in London, brought together representatives from the regional specialised commissioning groups  and the national specialised commissioning group team with specialised service providers, patient representatives, the department of health and NHS Confederation staff.  The purpose of the event was to provide an opportunity for delegates to discuss the implications the health white paper proposals for specialised commissioning functions, and to share their thoughts and ideas on how the proposals might be taken forward. The outputs from the discussion will help to shape the NHS Confederation’s responses to the white paper consultation.

Discussion during the day focussed on questions such as how the proposed NHS Commissioning Board would engage GP consortia in the commissioning of specialised services, how financial and public accountability for specialised commissioning would work, and the potential benefits and risks of bringing together the 10 regional specialised commissioning groups into a single organisation.
