2010/11 will be challenging for PCTs. As well as being responsible for leading delivery of one of the most demanding change programmes the NHS has ever faced as a result of the economic downturn, PCTs will also have to deliver significant management cost reductions. We also face uncertainty arising from the upcoming General Election. In this context, we believe that the need for a strong, independent voice for PCTs is greater than ever. Below is a snapshot of some of the work we are planning for 2010/11 to help our members face these challenges.
Communicating the role and performance of PCTs by:
- promoting a better understanding among stakeholders, the media and the public about the vital role that commissioners play in the NHS
- promoting an understanding of the critical role of community services at a time of great change.
Influencing policy by:
- horizon scanning to assess likely future policy and identifying opportunities to influence developments
- continuing our programme of engagement in 2010/11 with stakeholders and leading decision makers to ensure our members' views are heard
- focusing on our key workstreams of strengthening commissioning; developing community services; partnership with local government; and improving regulation and system management.
Promoting good practice by:
- identifying examples of good practice and supporting members to share practical learning to deliver effective implementation, with a major focus on delivery of productivity and quality improvement
- deeper engagement with PCT staff on specific areas of work.
