Overview of the day

The NHS Confederation in partnership with the National Mental Health Development Unit (NMHDU) hosted a successful leadership summit - Mental Health and Well-being: a public health agenda for the future. One hundred delegates from across the NHS, Local Authorities, voluntary organisations and the private sector participated in the event, which provided a crucial opportunity for leaders in the field to discuss the latest evidence in light of proposed changes to the NHS, public health and Local Government and in the context of public sector cuts.

Stephen Waring, Department of Health and Gregor Henderson, NMHDU chaired the event and highlights of the event included:

  • Lynne Friedli provided valuable thinking on well-being, recovery from mental illness and inequalities and emphasized the importance of promoting better mental health in order improve outcomes across health.
  • Dr Sam Thompson from the New Economics Foundation presented on the role of Local Government in well-being
  • Prof Martin Knapp shared economic evidence for preventing and promoting public mental health soon to be published.

The evidence shows how investing in public mental health will save costs to the public sector and society long-term. The NHS Confederation presented findings from a national study conducted to find out local leaders views on public mental and well-being. A key finding from the study shows that 98% of leaders from the NHS and Local Authorities considered addressing mental well-being would reduce health inequalities.

Christina Gray from Bristol PCT illustrated their new commissioning model to improve population mental well-being and Dr Hilary Guite discussed how they made improving public mental health a priority across Greenwich.

Delegates shared ideas and recommendations on how to improve mental well-being within the new proposed arrangements, the discussions of which will inform the final chapter of the NHS Confederation report on the local perspective of public mental health and well-being to be published February 2011.
