Over 65 delegates attended this meeting which took place at BMA House from 11am-2pm.

Highlights from the event included:

•  A presentation on the coalition government and what this means for mental health. by Louise Fish, Director of Communications, NHS Confederation NHS Confederation

 A presentation on the latest developments in personality disorder
by Meredith Vivienne, Head of Mental Health Care Pathways, Department of Health

 

Thursday 24 September

Over 60 delegates attended  the Mental Health Network’s General meeting on Thursday 24 September at BMA House.

The speakers included

  • David Behan, Director General, Social Care, Local Government and Care Partnerships Directorate, Department of Health,  Discussing the social care green paper
  • Carole Green, Project Director, Care Pathways and Pathways Project, discussing developing currencies for mental health payment by results and the care pathways & packages project
  • Dr Kevin Cleary, Medical Director, NPSA,  Disscussing the role and key objectives of NPSA

Thursday 7 May

Highlights from the event included an insightful presentation by Professor Len Bowers from City University on ‘keeping patients safer on acute psychiatric wards: Inpatient suicide, absconding and door locking’. The key findings presented were based on thirteen years and the product of more than £2 million in grant funded research. It’s the largest programme of research on absconding in the world.

Andrew Taylor, Director of the Co-operation and Competition Panel gave a very interesting and informative presentation on the overall approach by the Cooperation and Competition Panel (CCP) to administering the Principles and Rules of Cooperation and Competition. He also discussed how the CCP approaches different issues including mergers, procurement and commissioning.

Professor Clair Chilvers Chair Nottinghamshire healthcare NHS Trust gave a powerful presentation on mental health research UK,  a new initiative designed to address the gaps in existing funding by establishing a specific charity to support mental health research.

Other speakers included Kathryn James, Programme Director, National Institute for Adult Continuing Education (NIACE), who discussed adult learning and mental health wellbeing.

Cliff Prior, Chief Executive, UnLtd who presented on Social Enterprises in health and social care.

and Tim Hunt, Training and Development officer, Patient Opinion on the National Web Based Feedback for all Mental Health Service Users and Carers

 

Thursday 19 February

Over 65 delegates attended this event. Speakers included
Sue Baker, Director, Time To Change and Sophie Colett, Head of External Relations, Mind, updated members on the anti stigma campaign
Steve Shrubb, Director, Mental Health Network, discussed the Mental Health Network business plan

Netta Hollings, Programme Manager - Community and Mental Health, NHS Information Centre for health and social care, discussed the information review
David Morris, Programme Director, National Social Inclusion Programme, Department of Health discussed  Supporting Foundation Trust Development through engaged communities

Stephen Firn,  Chief Executive, Oxleas NHS Foundation Trust (co-chair of National Acute Care Forum) updated members on issues regarding acute inpatient care

Shaun Clee, Chief Executive, 2gether NHS Foundation Trust discussed mental health workforce issues

Stuart Bell,  Chief Executive, South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust updated members on Payment by Results (PbR).
