Therapist-delivered internet psychotherapy for depression in primary care: a randomised controlled trial

15/09/2009
The findings of a study published in The Lancet have prompted calls for the NHS to provide online cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) for those suffering from depression

200 patients in Bristol, London and Warwickshire participated in the research, which suggested that those accessing online therapy were 2.4 times more likely to have recovered after eight months than those receiving normal GP care. NICE guidance for the treatment of depression recommends psychological therapies as opposed to the prescribing of medication. However the number of antidepressant prescriptions has almost doubled in the past decade, from 18.424 million in 1998 to 35.960 million in 2008.
