Young Minds urges political parties to address young people’s mental health issues

23/04/2010
YoungMinds has produced a list of key election issues that we want all the parties to prioritise in the run up to the general election.

 They are to:

  1. Tackle stigma about mental health to ensure young people are able to speak out about how they feel and get the support services they need.
  2. Provide universal parenting education to all new parents with a focus on vulnerable families. Continue to provide accessible parenting education for all families until their children reach adulthood.
  3. Provide an army of health visitors to offer a universal service which is non stigmatizing, preventative and better able to access where nurturing deficits are occurring and provide a supportive environment to address this.
  4. Train all the children’s workforce including teachers, GP’s and hospital staff in mental health awareness and child development.
  5. Teach children emotional literacy and provide mental health support in schools so they develop resilience and good mental health
  6.  Improve mental health services, reduce waiting lists and provide continuity of care for all children and young people who are unhappy and distressed
  7. Ensure adequate provision of care and flexible services for those entering into and adjusting to adulthood.
  8. Involve young people in the planning and delivery of services. They are the experts-start listening to them.

YoungMinds are calling on all our supporters to help  to ensure their  key messages are heard. For more information about our aims and how to get involved visit  YoungMinds website
