Suicide prevention and promotion of mental health

05/02/2010
NHS organisations are being sought to join a pan-European project proposal on suicide prevention and promotion of mental health.

This project will be submitted under the Public Health Programme (one of the EU’s main funding streams of relevance to the NHS) and will take stock of the evidence base provided by a number of EU, national, regional and local level projects in this field and develop a common framework relevant for bottom-up actions geared towards the general public.

The project is being organised by an EU-level Working Group on Suicide Prevention, which was set up in April 2009.  The Working group are looking for other organisations working at a regional and local level who can bring different perspectives to the partnership.

The aim of the EU-funded project will be to use the evidence base from previous EU and national programmes and from local reference groups to:

  • Create a platform for regional and local authorities dedicated to suicide prevention and promotion of mental health.
  • Provide a framework where local networks of actors/agents/”gate keepers” (e.g. local authorities, schools, police, fire rescue services etc.) can cooperate and access tools helping them to identify people at risk and prevent suicide.

The project length would last for three years.

Interested organisations should send an expression of interest to michael.wood@nhsconfed.org not later than Friday 12th February
