The aim of the guide is to demystify the commissioning process, and also to demonstrate the importance of the active involvement of professionals and clinicians, and explain how, when and where they can usefully contribute to it. Written by a group of policy experts and clinical leaders, the guide arises from the need to ensure that commissioning decisions are based on good evidence, professional expertise and knowledge of the needs of local communities.
The guide is for clinicians and other mental health professionals working along the mental health care pathway who would like to learn more about the principles of World Class Commissioning (WCC) and how they could be involved in improving services for users. Mental health commissioning is relevant to many different stakeholders: people who use services, people who deliver services, those who monitor performance and effectiveness, and the wider public.
