The research was conducted by the Centre for Disability Research (CeDR) at Lancaster University on behalf of the Department of Health.
The report suggests that there will be sustained and accelerating growth in England of the numbers of adults with PMLD between 2009 and 2026 and predict that England could see an average annual increase of 1.8 per cent. They argue that this in turn will see an increase in need and demand for health and social care services in adults with PMLD.
In an average area in England with a population of 250,000 they suggest:
- The number of adults with people with PMLD receiving health and social care services will rise from 78 in 2009 to 105 in 2026
- The number of young people with PMLD becoming adults in any given year will rise from 3 in 2009 to 5 in 2026
