Department of Health report increase investment in Adult Mental Health Services

The Department of Health (DH) has published its ninth annual report detailing the level of investment in mental health services for adults between 18 and 64 years old in England for 2009/10.
 

The report compares this data with that of previous years.  They report that the overall real increase in investment in working age adult mental health services from 2001/02 to 2009/10 is £2.315 billion (58 per cent), from £3.996 billion to £6.311 billion.

The key findings of the report include:

  • Between 2008/09 to 2009/10 there was a real increase in total investment of 5.3 per cent, from £5.892 billion to £6.311 billion.
  • Between 2008/09 to 2009/10 there was an increase of 2.5 per cent in services provided by the non statutory sector, from 21.95 per cent to 24.45 per cent.
  • The percentage of investment in direct services has risen back to 2007/08 levels and is 81.3 per cent.  Since 2002/03 there has been an overall increase of 5.9 per cent.
  • Investment in the three priority areas, Crisis Resolution, Early Intervention and Assertive Outreach, has increased by 5 per cent since 2008/09.
  • All ten SHAs reported a real increase in investment after inflation, six reported an increase of over 5 per cent and only two reported an increase of less than 1 per cent.
  • With an increase of 6.3 per cent in real investment London remained the highest investor per head across SHAs, spending £211 per head compared with the national average of £193 per head.
  • Between SHAs, investment per head ranged from 9.8 per cent below the national average of £193 to 8.9 per cent above.
