Developing the NHS Commissioning Board - Government’s guidance

27/07/2011
As part of the NHS reform programme, the Government has published initial proposals from the NHS Commissioning Board development team setting out how the Board will operate and will be organised.

DH logoThe guidance is intended to give further clarity to stakeholders about the suggested design of the Board.

The Ambulance Service Network's (ASN) briefing provides a summary of the guidance, setting out key points for ASN members. Areas covered in the summary include:

  • the purpose of the Board and how it will cover commissioning that cannot be devolved  to clinical commissioning groups
  • how the Board will develop including hosting clinical networks and clinical senates, the latter enabling multi-disciplinary input to strategic clinical decision making to support commissioners.

Integrated urgent and emergency care

The ASN is pleased with the high priority given to the development of integrated urgent and emergency care and a clearly defined emergency planning role of the Board is reassuring.
