A public-private partnership between the European Commission and the European pharmaceutical industry

Medication capsulesThe Innovative Medicines Initiative (IMI) is a public-private partnership between the European Commission and the pharmaceutical industry which aims to promote more efficient discovery and development of medicines by supporting research into the drug development process. The IMI is funded equally by the EU and industry and has a budget of €2 billion for the period 2008-2017.

Second call for projects

The second calll under the IMI programme, whose aim is to accelerate the development and discovery of new medicines in the field of cancer, diabetes and inflammatory and infectious diseases and to enhance knowledge management through Electronic Health Records (EHR), closed on 8 February 2010. 

The call had a budget of EUR 76.8 million and sought projects under the following topics:

  • Imaging biomarkers for anti-cancer drug development
  • New tools for target validation to improve drug efficacy
  • Molecular biomarkers: accelerating cancer therapy development and refining patient care
  • Identification and development of rapid point of care microbiologic diagnostic tests to facilitate clinical practice and conduct of clinical trials
  • Drug/disease modelling: library and framework
  • Open pharmacological space
  • Electronic Health Records (EHR) to support and enhance medical research
  • Understanding aberrant adaptive immunity mechanisms in human chronic immune-mediated diseases: rheumatoid arthritis (RA), systemic lupus erythematosus & inflammatory bowel disease
  • Translational research in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and RA like diseases: bridging between animal models and humans

Information on the outcome of the second call, including information on successful applications, will be posted here as it becomes available.

The first IMI call took place in April 2009. 15 projects were finally selected to receive a share of €246 million.
