Following a comprehensive review, the Ambulance Service Network (ASN)
has decided to change the format of its events programme in 2009.
The new programme has been designed to reflect the way ambulance services engage with other parts of the NHS to deliver world class urgent care.

Opportunities and challenges in urgent care reform
13 October, London
Driving the quality and efficiency agenda
Whilst the NHS has been driving up access standards and increasing capacity in the past decade, politicians, professionals and patients expect more. With the governments health white paper commitment focusing on outcomes rather than targets, what will a quality improvement approach look like for urgent and emergency care?
This year’s Ambulance Service Network conference, entitled Opportunities and challenges in urgent care reform, provides members with the oppotunity to join with colleagues and peers from across the country to debate and discuss how urgent care can be improved to deliver better services at a time where the NHS faces an unprecedented efficiency challenge and new commissioning and regulatory landscapes.

Strategic challenges facing ambulance services
Following the success of the ASN non-executive directors (NEDs) events in 2009, the ASN are hosting two events for 2010 for ASN member NEDs. The events (the first of which took place in July in Leeds) have been designed to ensure that ASN NEDs are more effectively involved with the work of the ASN and the NHS Confederation.

OPM Major Trauma Improvement Forum
Major trauma has a high personal impact on patients and families. In light of this, the Department of Health has recently taken steps to re-organise major trauma care into specialist centres to improve the quality of care, and as part of these changes, the Major Trauma Improvement Forum has been launched. The aim is to give patients, families, carers and professionals, as well as organisations or groups who represent patients and professionals, an important opportunity to influence the improvement of major trauma care. The Office for Public Management (OPM) has been commissioned by the Department of Health to set up this forum to support the developments lead by Prof. Keith Willett to improve major trauma care.
Members are invited to contribute to the forum. Participating will involve responding to no more than four brief online surveys over April and May, though there are also other opportunities to take part including online discussion forums if you or your contacts would like to be more involved. On doing this you’ll be invited to take part in our first survey which will ask for you/your organisation’s views on and experience with on the different stages of major trauma care – from initial contact with emergency services and receiving acute trauma care through to specialist and general rehabilitation.
The OPM are also conducting some qualitative research with major trauma patients. If you have direct dealings with patients and are happy to introduce the project to them, please contact Tim Vanson, OPM, by email TVanson@opm.co.uk or phone 020 7239 7806.

Understanding the growth in demand – expert seminar
8th June 2010, Nuffield Trust, London
We are planning an expert seminar with the Nuffield Trust designed to bring together researchers, public health specialists, commissioners and health care staff who have been investigating the patterns of increasing activity and demand.
We are asking for people who have investigated local, regional or national trends in any of the following:
- Out of hours care
- A&E attendance
- Emergency admissions
- Ambulance calls and journeys
- NHS Direct and other telephone contacts
We are planning a seminar to share quantitative and qualitative analysis of what has been happening and what has been driving this. The event will be held at the Nuffield Trust in London on 8th June.
This will be used as the basis for a further event which will look at the policy, clinical and managerial solutions that might be available.
If you are interested in participating please respond to events@nuffieldtrust.org.uk
If you have data and analysis to share please contact Ian Blunt, ian.blunt@nuffieldtrust.org.uk.
